Trees Near Power Lines in Frisco
Three different parties can be responsible for one tree under one wire. Sorting out which is the first step, and it is done from the ground.
Start With Which Utility
The City of Frisco's resident guide lists two electric delivery companies: Oncor and CoServ. Which one owns the poles and wires at your address is printed on your electric bill.
Oncor: 888-313-6862. CoServ electric emergencies: 855-938-3496. A line that is down or arcing is a 911 call.
Whether your street has overhead lines at all varies across the city. Where the wires are underground there is still equipment to keep clear: CoServ asks for ten feet of open space in front of a padmount transformer and three feet at the sides and back.

Who Trims What
Oncor's own instruction to customers is blunt: never attempt to trim trees from pole to pole. This site adds nothing to that except agreement. Nobody without line-clearance qualification should be in a tree, on a ladder or holding a pole saw near an energized wire.
How a Job Near a Wire Usually Goes
- 1
Look, from the ground
Note which wire the tree is near: the high lines between poles, or the single line running to the house.
- 2
Call the utility
Report limbs in the pole-to-pole lines. For the service drop on Oncor, ask about a temporary disconnect.
- 3
Then the tree service
With the line cleared or de-energized, a tree crew does the remaining pruning or removal.
Expect the utility's cut to look different from a tree service's. Line-clearance crews cut for distance from the conductor, and Oncor says plainly that after a storm it removes only what it must to restore service and leaves the rest of the tree and the debris. What remains may need a tree crew to make it balanced and sound.
Planting under a wire
The lasting fix is a tree that never reaches the line. CoServ publishes a list of twenty species that mature at 15 to 35 feet for planting near overhead lines. Frisco's planting rules add four feet of distance between a trunk and utility lines.
Questions People Ask First
The utility cut my tree badly. Can it do that?
Utilities hold easements that allow them to keep lines clear, and they cut for clearance. A tree service can often improve what is left.
Will the utility remove the whole tree?
Rarely. Its job is the line. Removal of a tree on your lot is yours to arrange once the wire is safe to work near.
A limb is resting on the line to my house but the power is on. What now?
Stay away from it and call the utility. Do not touch the limb, the wire or anything metal in contact with either.
Do tree services work near wires at all?
Some employ or subcontract qualified line-clearance workers. Most coordinate with the utility. Either way, tell them about the wire when you call so the right crew is sent.
