Oak Tree Pruning in Frisco: Mind the Calendar

Oaks are the one group of trees where the date on the work order matters as much as the cuts.

The Rule, and Where It Comes From

Avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February 1 through June 30. Paint every cut on an oak immediately, in any month. That is the standing guidance from Texas forestry groups for preventing oak wilt.

Oak wilt is a fungal disease. Texas A&M Forest Service says it has been confirmed in 76 Texas counties and that all oaks can be infected. It moves two ways: underground, through the connected roots of neighboring live oaks, and overland, when sap-feeding beetles carry spores from fungal mats on diseased red oaks to a fresh wound on another oak. The beetles are most active in spring, which is the reason for the calendar. A painted wound stops attracting them.

The Texas Trees Foundation, based in Dallas, notes that the disease was first identified in Texas in Dallas, and lists Texas red oak, Shumard oak, blackjack oak and water oak as the most susceptible.

One thing this site could not confirm is the current county-by-county record for Collin and Denton counties. The statewide guidance does not depend on it, and a careful crew follows the rule everywhere in North Texas.

What This Means for Scheduling

  • Routine oak pruning belongs in the hottest part of summer or the cold part of winter: July through January.
  • Storm damage does not wait. A broken oak limb in April gets cut in April. The torn wound is already open; the crew makes a clean cut and paints it at once.
  • Dead limbs can come out in any month. Dead wood is not a fresh wound.
  • Tools should be cleaned between oaks. Ask how the crew handles that.
  • Red oak firewood from a tree that died suddenly should not be stored uncovered next to healthy oaks. The Texas Trees Foundation's advice for diseased red oak debris is to chip, burn or bury it right away.

Frisco's parks department lists bur oak, lacey oak and red oak among the trees that grow well in the city, so there are plenty of oaks on lots here for the rule to apply to. If a company offers to prune yours in March at a discount because it has a gap in the schedule, that tells you something about the company.

If You Think an Oak Is Already Sick

Leaves that brown from the veins or the tips in late spring, or a red oak that turns and drops its leaves within a few weeks in early summer, are reasons to have the tree looked at before anything is cut. Diagnosis is a job for an ISA Certified Arborist or the Forest Service; several other problems look similar.

Fungicide injection for oak wilt is a pesticide application. In Texas that takes a Texas Department of Agriculture license when done for pay. A pruning crew is not automatically qualified to do it.

Questions People Ask First

Is a live oak pruned on the same dates as a red oak?

Yes. The February through June caution applies to every oak.

What paint is used?

Any wound dressing or ordinary latex or spray paint. The purpose is to cover fresh sap for the first few days, not to heal the tree.

Does this apply to my elm or my crape myrtle?

No. The calendar and the paint are specific to oaks. Other trees are generally left unpainted.

A builder is clearing the lot next door in spring. Can I do anything?

You can ask that wounds on oaks near the property line be painted, and you can point the builder to the Forest Service guidance. Trees on land under development are also the ones Frisco's tree preservation rules cover.
