Is This Tree Dying? A Checkup for Frisco Yard Trees

Most trees here do not die of one thing. They are planted into a hard spot and then asked to get through a bad summer.

The Ground These Trees Stand In

Frisco sits on the Blackland Prairie: deep clay over chalk and marl, known as cracking clay for the wide splits that open in dry weather. Before the subdivisions this was farmland and grassland, with trees mostly along the creeks.

A shade tree on a graded residential lot is growing somewhere trees did not grow thick on their own, in soil that swings between saturated and split.

Add what building does. Lots are scraped and compacted, the tree goes into a hole in that clay, and its roots share the space with a slab, a driveway, a sidewalk and an irrigation system set for turf. Some trees thrive anyway. Others grow well for ten years and then stall when the roots run out of room or a hard season arrives.

Reading the Symptoms

What you seeWhat it often points toUrgency
Dead twigs at the very topRoot trouble or drought stress; the top is the last place water reachesHave it looked at this season
Leaves brown at the edges in July and AugustHeat and water stress, common after planting and in drought yearsUsually not urgent on its own
One whole side brown or bareDamage on that side: a severed root, a trunk wound, a girdling wire or rootHave it looked at soon
Bark falling off in sheets, wood dry underneathThat part of the trunk is deadSoon; it will not recover
Mushrooms or conks on the trunk or at the baseDecay insideSoon, especially near a house or walk
A lean that is new, or soil lifting on one sideThe root plate is movingNow. Keep people away and call
Thin top on an ash with flaked barkPossibly emerald ash borerSee the ash page

These are starting points. A browning tree in a dry August can be perfectly sound, and a green one can be hollow.

Who Can Tell You for Certain

A tree service can tell you whether a tree is a hazard and what it would take to prune or remove it. A diagnosis of why it is declining is a different skill. For that, ask for an ISA Certified Arborist. The credential is voluntary and issued by the International Society of Arboriculture after an exam and documented experience; it is not a state license, and Texas does not license arborists. Holders are listed in the ISA's public directory.

The February 2021 freeze is still part of this story in North Texas. Trees that leafed out afterward but lost bark or major limbs have been failing in the years since, and a tree that looked like a survivor in 2022 can be the one dropping limbs now.

If the answer turns out to be an insect or a disease, the treatment is pesticide work, licensed in Texas by the Department of Agriculture. If it turns out to be watering, that is your irrigation controller and possibly a licensed irrigator. A pruning crew handles neither by default.

Questions People Ask First

Is a dead tree an emergency?

A dead tree over a house, a play area or a sidewalk should be scheduled promptly. One standing alone at the back of a large lot has more time, though dead wood gets harder to work in the longer it stands.

Can a declining tree be saved?

It depends on the cause. Removing a girdling tie, correcting buried trunk flare or changing the watering can turn a tree around. Decay in the trunk cannot be reversed.

Do I need a permit to remove a dead tree?

On a platted single-family lot in Frisco the city's tree removal permit does not apply. On other property the ordinance has an exception for trees a Certified Arborist determines are dead or diseased, and a separate article asks for written approval. Check with the HOA either way.

Will more water fix it?

Sometimes that is exactly the problem and sometimes it is the opposite. Clay holds water for a long time, and roots drown as readily as they dry out. Have someone look before changing the schedule.

Have Someone Look at It

Describe what changed and when. An independent tree service will arrange a visit, and you can ask for a certified arborist.
