Tree Removal in Frisco

On a suburban lot almost no tree can simply be felled. It comes down in pieces, on ropes, into a space the size of a parking spot.

Do You Need Permission?

For most Frisco homeowners the city permit is not the hurdle. The zoning ordinance requires a Tree Removal Permit for a protected tree, except for one on a single-family or two-family lot within a plat of record.

The HOA is the more likely gatekeeper, and the lot's required tree count still applies. Check both before the crew is booked.

The exemption does not reach everything. Unplatted land, commercial sites and land under development fall under the permit and mitigation rules, and a separate chapter of the city code sets a penalty of $300 per caliper inch for trees removed from unplatted property without approval. If you own acreage on the edge of the city, or a lot that has not been through final plat, ask the city's planning office before a saw starts.

The full picture, with the code sections, is on the permits and HOA page.

Reasons a Frisco Tree Comes Out

  • It is dead or mostly dead. Freeze, drought or disease. Dead wood gets more brittle every month it stands, which makes the job harder the longer it waits.
  • It split. A two-stem tree that has opened at the fork.
  • It was planted in the wrong place. A large-growing species four feet from a driveway, or under a wire, or against the foundation line.
  • It is an ash. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Collin County, and an untreated ash is a removal waiting for a date.
  • Construction. A pool, an addition or a new fence line.

A sound, well-placed shade tree adds to a property and takes decades to replace. If the complaint is leaves, shade on the grass or acorns, ask the crew what trimming would do before choosing removal.

How Sectional Removal Works

The crew decides first how the wood will reach the ground: lowered on ropes, lifted out by crane, or dropped into a cleared zone. A climber or a lift works from the top down, taking the limbs and then the trunk in lengths the ground crew can handle. Plywood goes down over lawn and sprinkler heads where equipment has to cross. On most Frisco lots access is through a side gate, and the width of that gate decides which machines can be used.

What you should have in writing before the day: which tree, how low the stump will be cut, whether stump grinding is included, whether all wood and chips are hauled, how the lawn and fence are protected, and proof of the company's liability insurance. Texas has no state license for tree removal that this site could find, so the insurance certificate is the document that matters.

A tree within reach of an overhead power line is not an ordinary removal. The utility may need to drop the service line or send its own line-clearance contractor first. Mention any wire when you call.

Questions People Ask First

Do I have to replace a tree I remove?

Possibly. Frisco's landscape rules set a required number of trees per residential lot by zoning district, and many HOAs enforce their own count. If removing this tree takes the lot below the number, expect to plant another.

How long does a removal take?

A small ornamental is an hour or two. A mature shade tree between two houses is most of a day. The crew will say after seeing it.

What happens to the wood?

It is chipped and hauled unless you ask to keep some. If the tree is an ash, the wood should stay local: moving ash wood out of a quarantined county is restricted.

Can it be done without a truck on my lawn?

Often, yes, with more hand-carrying and more time. Say so up front, since it changes the quote.

Give the tree's rough height, what stands near it, and how wide the gate is. An independent tree service does the rest.
